Live Peer Group Discussions on Best Practice

Best Practice Symposium Events

An IAPGT Best Practice Symposium Event is a conference/workshop where people interested in advancing their gyroplane knowledge get together with others in their peer group for structured discussions and debates on elements of gyroplane flying that are known to be factors in accidents.

It is a fantasic opportunity to learn lessons from the mistakes of others!

We host two different Best Practice Symposium Events:

Two great events. Similar content, but different formats.

The Best Practice Symposium for Gyroplane Instructors

The Best Practice Symposium for Gyroplane Instructors is a structured interactive conference event where a group of gyroplane instructors get together to discuss, debate and examine different techniques for teaching gyroplane students.

The objective is for instructors to:

  • Review the gyroplane incidents and accidents that are occurring worldwide.
  • Learn how different instructors use different techniques for teaching elements of gyroplane flying
  • Understand the benefits or detriments of different techniques, in different scenarios
  • Challenge any techniques, if they disagree with what has been said
  • Develop their own instructional styles, based upon the “best” of what has been discussed at the event.

WHO ATTENDS?

  • All, and only, active gyroplane instructors are invited to attend. It is a ‘closed door’ event where participants can speak openly.
  • The event is chaired by an IAPGT Course Presenter, who facilitates the meeting and adds the knowledge gained from previous “Best Practice” to the event.
  • The event is documented by an IAPGT “Best Practice” stenographer, to ensure the best ideas are communicated to all our members in future events.

WHAT IS THE FORMAT?

  • Who’s who
  • How “Best Practice” is documented and communicated.
  • The most common accidents and incidents that are occurring in gyroplane flying.

The topics are based upon the accidents discussed in part 1 but will be categorized into

  • Take Off Techniques
  • Ground Handling and Rotor Handling Techniques
  • Landing Techniques
  • Precautionary and Emergency Landings Techniques
  • Other Techniques brought up during the event

For each topic, delegates will be asked to

  • Describe the techniques that they use themselves
  • Listen to the techniques of other instructors in the group
  • Debate the pro’s and con’s of the techniques and in particular the different scenarios where one technique may be advantageous over another technique.
  • The current definition of “Best Practice” will be discussed and proposals will be made to amend the definition, if appropriate.

A review of the Online Best Practice Challenge process is presented along with training that will allow instructors to participate in the Best Practice Challenge as they discover new techniques and keep up to date with changes proposed by other instructors in the worldwide gyroplane community.

A Best Practice Symposium for Gyroplane Instructors will be approximately 20% Presentation and 80% Interaction.

Notes

The Best Practice Symposium for Gyroplane Pilots

The Best Practice Symposium for Gyroplane Pilots is a structured interactive conference event where a group of gyroplane pilots are presented with a number of the latest best practice techniques for gyroplane flying.

The objective is for pilots to:

  • Review the gyroplane incidents and accidents that are occurring worldwide
  • Learn from the mistakes of others, that lead to accidents
  • Develop their knowledge, and fill in gaps where they have forgotten what was taught during their training

WHO ATTENDS?

  • Any person who flies gyroplanes. Pilots, Instructors and Student Pilots are all welcome.
  • The event is chaired by one or more Course Presenters, who facilitates the meeting, makes the presentations and encourages the open forums.

A Best Practice Symposium for Gyroplane Pilots will be approximately 80% Presentation and 20% Interaction. Pilots are invited to share their own experiences with a view to helping fellow pilots benefit from the experiences of others.

NOTES

  • It is usual for a Best Practice Symposium for Gyroplane Instructors to be held prior to holding a Best Practice Symposium for Gyroplane Pilots. This allows instructors to influence the presentations given to pilots who may include their students or former students.
  • We hold separate “Instructor Only” Symposium so that instructors can debate without being observed by their students. We do not want students or inexperienced pilots being confused by the content of debates and myriad of different techniques.
  • A Best Practice Symposium for Instructors is usually at 2-3 day event. A Best Practice Symposium for Pilots is usually a 1-2 day event.
  • The price of each event is calculated separately, taking into account the direct costs of holding the events, expenses, the number of people attending and any sponsorship.
